Mary Schwab-Stone, M.D.

Director, Child Study Center
Irving B. Harris Professor of Child Psychiatry, Pediatrics and Psychology Yale University School of Medicine
Chief, Child Psychiatry Children's Hospital at Yale-New Haven

Research Interests

Dr. Mary Schwab-Stone’s clinical, research and teaching efforts focus on aspects of community child and adolescent psychiatry. Over the past 19 years, she has developed and expanded a model of psychiatric consultation to public schools. Children receiving, or being considered for Special Education Programming, on the basis of emotional, behavioral or developmental disorders, are evaluated by Dr. Schwab-Stone and the Child Study Center based consultation team in collaboration with school personnel. This also serves as a teaching vehicle for advanced trainees in psychiatry and nursing, with the goal of building necessary skills for working in community systems, especially schools.

Dr. Schwab-Stone has conducted an ongoing epidemiological assessment of competencies, problem behaviors, attitudes, and psychiatric symptomatology, known as the Social and Health Assessment, in area schools since 1992. Typically, each wave of data collection involves about 3,000 students; hence, approximately 30,000 surveys have been completed to date. This team also manages the administration of a teacher rating scale for elementary age students that assesses behavior, symptoms and competencies. She serves as Director of the Center's Program on International Child and Adolescent Mental Health, which addresses child mental health research and policy issues cross-culturally. Her research interests focus on psychiatric issues as they bear on psychosocial problems of children and adolescents in community settings.
