Statement from the Director, Fred R. Volkmar, M.D.

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to the web site of the Yale Child Study Center. For nearly 100 years we have been committed to research, treatment, and training related to children and their families. We have remarkable and oustanding programs in areas such as autism and related disorders, Tourette syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorders, community mental health, treatment research, and neuroscience and neurobiology. We offer training to an outstanding group of fellows in child psychiatry, psychology, and social work as well as to trainees in pediatrics, medical and other graduate students, and to Yale college students. We are also active at the national and international level in fostering the growth of better models of clinical care and service provision.

As you will see on this web site our clinical program has expanded tremendously. As a Center we remain committed to providing the highest quality clinical care integrated with advances from our research, indeed we believe that often our best research has been inspired by our work with patients. Clinical services include a range of inpatient and outpatient programs. Our specialty clinics attract patients from around the world. During fiscal year 2006 we had over 22,000 clinical visits, and this number does not reflect the many children and families engaged in research.

Our research efforts range from the level of the gene and of the brain to schools and families and society at large. Over the past year we have been pleased that in a time when research resources are increasingly stretched we have been able to increase our research grant income significantly. We also gratefully acknowledge the support of the Associates of the Center who provide both intellectual and financial support and give us the flexibility to support truly innovative work.
