Policy Research at CENTURY/TTURC
The tobacco policy research unit at the Yale School of Public Health
conducts empirical, population-based and policy related research
on tobacco use and tobacco control.
Our mission is to provide an empirical basis to promote public
and private policy changes that can reduce the negative impact of
tobacco use and dependence.
Our research team aims to:
- Study the impact of smoking and smoking cessation on workplace
productivity.
- Quantify the economic value of a smoker quitting.
- Produce cost-effectiveness analyses of new treatments for
smoking cessation.
- Analyze smoking cessation in special populations.
- Conduct applied policy analysis of current policy issues.
Specific projects range from analyzing the 'securitization' of
state funds from the Master Settlement Agreement to research using
the large, national Tobacco Use Survey of the Current Population
Survey to examine the impact of smoking and smoking cessation on
absences from work. We also have several projects using 'willingness
to pay' as a method of determining the value to society and individuals
of quitting smoking.
Professor Jody Sindelar, Ph.D., is the Principal Investigator of
the grant. Her research is on the economics of substance abuse,
focusing on the impact of alcoholism, tobacco use, and illicit drug
use on productivity, crime, education, and the well-being of families.
Dr. Sindelar's work has been published in medical care, health services,
substance abuse, and economics journals. Tracy Falba, Ph.D., is
the Co-Principal Investigator.
Other investigators in the policy research unit include Professor Susan
Busch, Ph.D., Professor Hong Wang, Ph.D., and Professor Patricia Keenan, Ph.D. The unit also includes Melissa Carlson and Angela Bauer Snyder,
Ph.D. students.
To find out more about our work, please see our policy
research projects page.
This policy research is funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation
and is part of the Yale TTURC (Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research
Center) and CENTURY (the Center for Nicotine and Tobacco Use Research,
Dr. Stephanie O'Malley, P.I.). CENTURY is located at the Yale Medical
School and School of Public Health. The policy research team maintains
close links with the CENTURY/TTURC Communications Unit, directed
by Pem McNerney. To find out more about the work done by the communications
unit, please read our news page.
