New book explains how to help smokers quit
New Haven -- Both established and promising new pharmacological treatments can be used to tackle nicotine addiction, according to "Medication Treatments for Nicotine Dependence," a new book that outlines numerous state-of-the-art ways to treat people who want to quit smoking.
The book is edited by Dr. Tony P. George, associate professor of psychiatry
from Yale University School of Medicine, and a member of the Yale Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center (TTURC). The book includes contributions from many other TTURC researchers, both at Yale and at other universities. The book will be published in August, 2006 by CRC Press, a part of the Taylor & Francis Group.
“Major advances in our understanding of the neural systems underlying nicotine dependence have led to the development of medication treatments including off-label medications and novel agents. Taking a translational approach to the development of effective pharmacological treatments for nicotine addiction, Medication Treatments for Nicotine Dependence is the first book to bring together experts in neuroscience, behavioral pharmacology, clinical psychopharmacology, clinical psychology, psychiatry, and science policy at both the pre-clinical and clinical levels. It reviews state-of-the-art approaches to the development of current and novel agents for nicotine dependence treatment,” said a statement from CRC Press.
TTURC contributors include Dr. George, Dr. Stephanie O’Malley, Dr. Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, Dr. Mehmet Sofuoglu, Dr. Jaakko Lappalainen, Dr. Andrea Weinberger, Erin Reutenauer, Taryn Allen, Dr. Kristi Sacco, Dr. Marina Picciotto, Rebecca Steiner, all from Yale, and Dr. Cheryl Oncken from University of Connecticut. TTURC contributors from other universities include Dr. Caryn Lerman, Dr. Paul Pentel and Dr. Dorothy Hatsukami.
The 256 hardcover book with color inserts will be $139.95. The Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco is offering a special 15 percent discount through 3/31/06. For more information about the book, please see its table of contents, the special offer, the announcement from the copy and the preface.
