CENTURY/TTURC Press Release
New Haven, Conn. - Advanced undergraduate, graduate and medical students are encouraged to apply for a summer fellowship program being offered by CENTURY/TTURC. The fellowship is designed so that students can increase their knowledge about research in the area of tobacco/nicotine addiction. The three-month fellowship will allow students to work with a mentor from the CENTURY faculty on a tobacco- or nicotine-related research project. The students will participate in a tobacco/nicotine journal club. At the end of the fellowship period, they will be asked to present their summer research to the CENTURY faculty and may also be given the opportunity to attend and present their research findings at the annual conference of the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco. Students who are interested in applying are asked to decide which TTURC researcher they would like to work with. Then, working with that researcher, the student should develop a short, one- to two-page description of their project. The description should outline the project itself, and the kind of training the student will receive. As part of the application process, the student also should submit their CV, a letter from the sponsoring Yale TTURC faculty member stating they will supervise the student's work, and complete an application. The application can be obtained by contacting Jane Murray at (203) 974-7591 or jane.murray@yale.edu. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications by April 15. Applications should be submitted to Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin at (203) 974-7595 or suchitra.krishnan-sarin@yale.edu. The applications will be reviewed by the TTURC executive committee, with decisions being made by the end of April. Three to four summer fellows will be selected from the pool of applicants. Fellows will receive $1,000 a month for three months and a one-time housing stipend of $800. The fellowship can run for May, June, July or June, July, August. CENTURY is the Center for Nicotine and Tobacco Use Research at Yale. TTURC, a part of CENTURY, is the Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center. TTURC is funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Cancer Institute, and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The goal of CENTURY/TTURC is to investigate and improve the treatment of tobacco dependence by working cooperatively across disciplines. CENTURY and TTURC are designed to provide support services to other tobacco research at the Yale campus. We are based at the Connecticut Mental Health Center at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, with research facilities at locations around the Yale campus, including the School of Public Health, the Yale Psychiatric Institute, the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit and Yale-New Haven Hospital. We also have research facilities at the Connecticut Veterans Administration Medical Centers at West Haven and Newington, and the University of Connecticut Health Center. Yale TTURC is one of seven centers around the country conducting a wide variety of transdisciplinary tobacco-related research. The other participating centers are Brown University, University of California at Irvine, University of Minnesota, University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, University of Southern California, and University of Wisconsin.
