Q: What does CENTURY stand for?

A: The Center for Nicotine and Tobacco Use Research at Yale

Q: What does TTURC stand for?

A: The Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center

Q: What do you mean by transdisciplinary?

A: In our effort to find solutions for people who find it hard to quit smoking, we believe the best approach is to have researchers cooperating across disciplines in an ongoing manner. Without a transdisciplinary approach, for example, a basic science researcher examining the problem at a cellular or genetic level, might not hear about the most recent, cutting-edge work in clinical research fields such as psychiatry and psychology. By setting up and encouraging transdisciplinary relationships, the Yale TTURC ensures that these researchers are in close and frequent contact, thereby encouraging them to work together to form solutions. The relationships extend not only to the Yale campus, but to seven other centers nationwide that have formed TTURCs.

Q: What is the relationship of CENTURY to TTURC?

A: CENTURY is the umbrella organization that includes TTURC.

Q: Where do you get your money?

A: The National Institute on Drug Abuse, the National Cancer Institute and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, among other sources .

Q: Can you help me if I want to quit smoking?

A: Yes, if you are willing to participate in and qualify for one of our clinical trials. To find out more, please read about those trials.

Q: Who's in charge there?

A: Dr. Stephanie O'Malley is the principal investigator on the TTURC grant. Dr. Jody Sindelar is the principal investigator on The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant. The other principal investigators include Dr. Suchitra Krishnan-Sarin, Dr. Marina Picciotto, Dr. Peter Salovey, and Dr. Julie K. Staley. Our core directors are Dr. David Kessler, Dr. Peter Jatlow, Dr. Carolyn Mazure, Dr. Robert Makuch, Dr. Sherry McKee, Dr. O'Malley and Dr. Krishnan-Sarin.

Q: Where are you located?

A: We are based at the Connecticut Mental Health Center at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, with research facilities at locations around the Yale campus, including the School of Public Health, the Yale Psychiatric Institute, the Substance Abuse Treatment Unit and Yale-New Haven Hospital. We also have research facilities at the Connecticut Veterans Administration Medical Centers.

Q: How can you help me if I am interested in doing tobacco-related research at Yale?

A: If you have an ongoing tobacco- or nicotine-related research project, or one that you are planning, please let us know. You are welcome to participate in our regularly scheduled seminars on tobacco projects. We also have experts who can work with you as you design your project, implement it and evaluate the results. We have a wealth of information and resources to share. The benefit to us is that we find out what you are doing, which could help us better understand and develop our approach to tobacco addiction. Our multi-disciplinary research team includes experts in psychiatry, behavioral neuroscience, social psychology, economics, women's health issues, clinical trial monitoring, biostatistics, public health, adolescent psychiatry, laboratory medicine, neurochemistry, policy issues and molecular neuroscience.
