Caroline Bell: Introduction
Caroline Bell lives 2 blocks from the town green, in a "saltbox" built of chestnut, oak, and tulip wood in 1742 by a grandson of one of Salt Meadow's founding families. From her dining room window she can see the West River as it rambles through a salt marsh on it's way to Long Island Sound, or watch her grandchildren feed the neighbor's goats through the backyard fence. Although the foundation has settled, causing the floors to slope, and the doors to stick in their frames, the house is sturdy.
Every morning at 7, Caroline adjusts the minute hand on the old Thomas clock on the mantlepiece above the stone fireplace. She and her late husband Will bought that clock on their wedding trip. As she winds the brass key, before starting out on her daily walk, she thinks of him.
This morning, when Ken Chatfield set out the rakes in front of his hardware store, he scanned the village green for Caroline. She wasn't there.
