Gene Finding
- Prokaryotic genes are relatively easy to locate:
- Promoters are well characterized.
- Long open reading suggest the presence of genes.
- However, for eukaryotes, it is more difficult:
- There are many types of transcription factor binding sites which work in conjunction with each other, most of which are not well characterized.
- Because of splicing, open reading frames are shorter and splice site (particularly acceptors) are difficult to locate.
- Gene finding programs attempt to automatically find genes in unannotated sequence.
